Staten Island, NY (May 23, 2026) – One person died, and nearly three dozen first responders were injured after an explosion and fire at a shipyard on Staten Island, according to FDNY officials.
The fire was reported around 3:30 p.m. Friday, May 23, at 3075 Richmond Terrace between Lockman Ave and Andros Ave. Emergency units were initially called for workers reportedly trapped inside a structure at the dockside facility, where a fire had broken out in the rear of the shipyard.
Officials said a major explosion occurred shortly after 4 p.m., followed by a second blast while emergency personnel were inside conducting search operations. That second explosion injured multiple firefighters and worsened conditions inside the structure.
FDNY officials confirmed that one worker died in the incident, while another worker survived but sustained injuries. A total of 34 FDNY members were reported injured, with some suffering serious blast-related trauma.
Investigators are continuing to determine what triggered the explosion and how the fire developed inside the shipyard facility.
Why Industrial Explosions Can Cause Widespread Harm
Explosions in industrial environments can produce powerful blast waves that travel through confined structures, increasing the risk of both structural damage and internal injuries. These conditions are especially dangerous in enclosed or metal-framed facilities near waterfront or dock operations.
When multiple emergency units are working inside a structure, secondary explosions can significantly escalate the severity of injuries due to limited escape routes and reduced visibility. Blast pressure can affect even those not in direct contact with flames.
Following such incidents, investigators typically examine fuel sources, equipment failure, and building conditions to determine how the explosion occurred and whether hazardous materials played a role.
