Altadena, CA (March 25, 2025) – Emergency medical personnel responded to a collision involving an electric bicycle and a vehicle on Arcadia Ave in Altadena Monday morning, March 24. The crash occurred around 9:21 a.m., prompting immediate dispatch of paramedics and fire crews from Los Angeles County Fire Department to the scene.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident initially appeared to involve a motorcycle, but it was later confirmed that the injured party had been riding an electric bicycle. The rider suffered injuries in the crash and was transported to an unknown hospital for further treatment. The extent of their injuries has not been disclosed at this time.

CHP logs indicate the rider declined towing services, opting instead to secure the e-bike to a street sign before being transported. The crash was initially logged as a significant injury incident but later reclassified as non-life-threatening. No information was released about the driver of the vehicle involved, and the investigation into the cause of the collision is ongoing.

Our hearts go out to the injured cyclist, and we hope for their full and speedy recovery.

E-Bike and Bicycle Accidents in California

Monday’s crash on Arcadia Ave is part of a growing trend of incidents involving electric bicycles across Southern California. With more people embracing e-bikes for commuting and recreation, roadways like those in Altadena are seeing increased mixed-use traffic involving motor vehicles and electric two-wheelers. Unfortunately, this uptick in usage has also resulted in more frequent collisions.

In this case, the rider of the e-bike was injured in a collision with a vehicle on a residential street during morning hours—a time when school and work traffic can create complex and sometimes hazardous driving conditions. The rider’s decision to secure their bike and avoid towing suggests they were conscious and able to communicate, a positive sign despite the injuries sustained.

E-bike riders are especially vulnerable due to their lower visibility, higher speed potential compared to traditional bicycles, and limited physical protection. California law treats many e-bikes similarly to bicycles, meaning they often share roads with vehicles but without the full protections of motorcycle regulations. This gap in infrastructure and public understanding increases risks for all involved.

In communities like Altadena, safety measures such as dedicated bike lanes, improved signage, and driver awareness campaigns are essential to reducing future incidents. As e-bike usage continues to grow, both riders and motorists must adapt to the evolving traffic landscape to ensure safe coexistence.
