Anchorage, AK (September 13, 2023) – A fire broke out in a Midtown fourplex, claiming one life early Wednesday, as the Anchorage Fire Department confirmed.
Responding to a call at 4:13 a.m. on East 48th Avenue, firefighters arrived within four minutes.
On arrival, two units were ablaze.
After dousing the flames, firefighters discovered a body in the ground-level unit, said Assistant Chief Alex Boyd.
The exact fire origin within that unit remains unknown.
The department noted the absence of working smoke alarms in that unit.
A resident from the above unit, alerted by their alarms, tried to help, but the flames had spread too quickly.
Four residents lived in the building; one wasn’t home during the fire.
The American Red Cross of Alaska is assisting displaced residents.
The fire department will release the deceased’s identity after informing the family.
The building suffered significant damage, rendering two units entirely lost.
The investigation is still ongoing.
