Aransas County, TX – Fatal Hit-and-Run Involving Bicyclist on Business 35

May 24, 2025

Aransas County, TX (May 24, 2025) – A tragic hit-and-run crash claimed the life of a bicyclist early Thursday morning in Aransas County. The fatal incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. along Business 35, approximately half a mile north of US 188.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a vehicle—believed to be a BMW—struck a male bicyclist who was riding southbound on the improved shoulder. The force of the impact hurled the cyclist into a nearby ditch. Shockingly, the driver fled the scene without stopping to provide assistance.

Responding officers later confirmed the bicyclist had no identification on him and remains unidentified. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by Justice of the Peace Judge Dupnik at 3:35 a.m. A witness who called 911 also reported a disturbing secondary incident: another male individual was seen rummaging through the victim’s belongings and then fleeing on foot.

Investigators believe the suspect vehicle may have front-end damage, particularly to the grill. Troopers from the Rockport Highway Patrol Office are continuing their search for the driver and vehicle involved.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the victim during this incredibly difficult time.

Hit-and-Run Crashes and Cyclist Safety in Texas

The fatal collision on Business 35 is a painful reminder of the risks bicyclists face, especially during nighttime travel on highways and rural shoulders. Texas, a state known for its expansive road networks, continues to grapple with an alarming rate of hit-and-run accidents, many of which leave victims without recourse or justice.

In 2023 alone, Texas reported over 600 fatal pedestrian and bicycle accidents involving drivers who fled the scene. The lack of accountability in these cases places emotional and legal burdens on the families left behind, and it highlights the critical need for public awareness and systemic enforcement of stop-and-render-aid laws.

Cyclists traveling along shoulder lanes at night are particularly vulnerable due to limited visibility and the high speeds of passing vehicles. Reflective gear, front and rear lighting, and cautious route planning are essential for safety. However, these precautions cannot always prevent tragedies when reckless or negligent drivers are involved.

For families affected by fatal crashes, legal representation can be a vital resource in seeking justice and financial support. In cases involving unidentified drivers, pursuing compensation may involve uninsured motorist claims and complex investigative procedures. A legal team with experience in wrongful death and hit-and-run claims can help guide families through these difficult legal challenges.
