Athens Co, OH – Fatal Motorcycle Crash on SR 691 Near Salem Rd

May 18, 2025

Athens County, OH (May 18, 2025) – Medics and fire crews worked to assist those suffering from injuries after a tragic two-vehicle crash that occurred Saturday afternoon on State Route 691 near Salem Rd. The collision involved a motorcycle and a passenger vehicle and has resulted in one confirmed fatality.

According to troopers from the Athens Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred shortly before 2 p.m. when a 2023 Honda CR-V traveling northbound on SR 691 attempted to make a left turn into a private drive. During this maneuver, the CR-V was struck by a southbound 2001 Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The impact caused the motorcycle to overturn violently.

The motorcyclist, identified as Clem J. Mace, 65, of Nelsonville, Ohio, suffered critical injuries. He was transported by Athens County EMS to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased by the Athens County Coroner’s Office.

Emergency responders from multiple agencies, including the York Township Fire Department, Ohio Department of Transportation, Athens County EMS, Riverside Towing, and Doc’s Towing, assisted at the scene. The crash site near milepost 5 was closed to traffic for an extended period, with both directions of SR 691 shut down while investigators worked.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol has confirmed that the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Mr. Mace during this incredibly difficult time.

Motorcycle Collisions and Fatal Crash Trends in Rural Ohio

State Route 691, like many two-lane highways across rural Ohio, can present challenges for motorcyclists and drivers alike. These routes often lack shoulders, have limited visibility at driveways, and involve regular turns into private properties — all of which increase the potential for serious accidents, particularly involving motorcycles.

Motorcycle crashes, even at moderate speeds, carry an exceptionally high risk of severe injury or death due to the lack of external protection. In fatal cases such as this, the consequences are devastating for families and communities.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol frequently reminds drivers to use extreme caution when turning across traffic, especially in areas where motorcycles may be less visible. Motorcyclists are also encouraged to wear protective gear and maintain high visibility to other drivers.

Victims’ families may have legal avenues for recourse when a crash involves another party’s failure to yield or negligent driving behavior. Documentation, accident reports, and legal guidance are essential in seeking accountability and support.
