Bellevue, IA (December 9, 2024) – A tragic boating accident occurred below Lock and Dam No. 12 on the Mississippi River Sunday morning. At approximately 11 a.m., a boat carrying three occupants capsized in the restricted area directly beneath the dam. The boat overturned due to a strong backflow current generated by the dam's operation, leading to devastating consequences.
Emergency responders, including Bellevue Fire & Rescue, Bellevue EMS, and multiple assisting agencies, arrived promptly at the scene. The victims were pulled from the hazardous waters and taken ashore, where lifesaving measures were administered. Despite their efforts, two individuals were pronounced dead at the scene. A third victim was transported via ambulance to MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center but was later pronounced dead.
Authorities have withheld the victims' names, pending notification of their families. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR), along with support from Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and additional emergency teams, is actively investigating the incident to determine the precise cause of the tragedy.
