Berkeley Twp, NJ (March 26, 2025) – A serious single-vehicle crash that took place earlier this morning in Berkeley Township has resulted in criminal charges after authorities confirmed the driver was under the influence of opioids at the time of the incident.
The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office announced Tuesday that 37-year-old Anthony Krempel, of Beachwood, has been charged with vehicular homicide following a toxicology report stemming from the fatal crash that occurred on January 20. The report revealed the presence of fentanyl and methadone in Krempel’s system at the time of the collision.
The incident happened just before noon on Grand Central Parkway. According to investigators, Krempel was driving an SUV at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the vehicle, which subsequently left the roadway and crashed into a tree. The impact caused severe injuries to the passenger, identified as 34-year-old Emanuela Fuchs, also of Beachwood.
Emergency responders from Berkeley Twp Fire and EMS rushed to the scene and provided immediate assistance. Paramedics and fire crews worked urgently to stabilize both victims. Fuchs was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead from her injuries. Krempel was also hospitalized with injuries sustained in the crash.
While at the hospital, authorities noted that Krempel showed signs of intoxication. A court-authorized blood draw was conducted, leading to the toxicology findings released this week. Prosecutors say those findings were pivotal in filing the vehicular homicide charge.
In addition to the homicide charge, Krempel received motor vehicle summonses on the day of the crash for driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, and careless driving. He remains in custody at the Ocean County Jail, where he awaits a detention hearing.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Emanuela Fuchs during this difficult time.
Drug-Impaired Driving and Fatal Accidents in New Jersey
This tragic crash in Berkeley Twp is a sobering example of the deadly consequences that can result from impaired driving—especially when dangerous opioids like fentanyl and methadone are involved. Drug-impaired driving has become an increasing concern across New Jersey, with law enforcement agencies facing more incidents where narcotics, rather than alcohol, are contributing to fatal collisions.
The stretch of Grand Central Parkway where this crash occurred is not commonly associated with high-speed accidents, which underscores how impaired judgment and reckless behavior can drastically alter safe driving conditions. When vehicles veer off-road at high speeds, especially in wooded or residential areas, the consequences are often catastrophic.
The aftermath for victims’ families can be devastating—emotionally and financially. In cases involving criminal charges like vehicular homicide, surviving loved ones may also be drawn into lengthy legal proceedings, which add to the complexity of their grieving process.
For communities, this incident highlights the broader need for education around the risks of driving under the influence of prescription and illicit opioids. These substances severely impair motor function, reaction time, and decision-making, increasing the risk of fatal crashes.
