Bingham County, ID (October 11, 2024) – A serious traffic accident occurred on Wednesday afternoon, October 9, resulting in injuries and significant disruption on Highway 39. The crash took place around 12:40 PM at the intersection of Highway 39 and Liberty Road, located between Rockford and Pingree.
Reports indicate that the collision involved a car and a farm truck hauling sugar beets. The driver of the car, an adult male, became trapped in the wreckage following the crash. Emergency responders from the Blackfoot Fire Department worked diligently to extricate him from the vehicle. He was subsequently transported to Bingham Memorial Hospital in Blackfoot, where he was reported to be in stable condition and expected to survive.
An emergency helicopter was dispatched to the scene and landed nearby; however, it was not needed for transport to the hospital. The Bingham County Sheriff's Office stated that the crash occurred when the farm truck, driven by another adult male, pulled out from Liberty Road and collided with the westbound car on Highway 39. The impact struck the passenger side of the farm truck, puncturing its fuel tank and resulting in a fuel spill on the roadway.
Blackfoot firefighters responded quickly to clean up the fuel spill, preventing any potential ignition hazards. The collision caused extensive damage to both vehicles, totaling the car and significantly damaging the farm truck. Additionally, some of the truck's load of sugar beets spilled onto the roadway as a result of the impact.
The driver of the farm truck, who was not injured, was cited for failure to yield, which contributed to the collision. Authorities closed Highway 39 for over an hour to manage the scene and ensure the safety of all involved.
The names of the drivers involved in the accident have not been released, but both men are reported to be from Bingham County and were the only occupants of their vehicles. The incident remains under investigation by the Bingham County Sheriff's Office.
Our thoughts are with the injured driver and his family during this challenging time.
