Black Canyon City, AZ (April 21, 2025) – A tragic rollover crash occurred Sunday on Interstate 17 near Black Canyon City, resulting in the death of one man and injuries to two others. The Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) has released preliminary details following the single-vehicle collision, which took place in the southbound lanes near milepost 237.5.
According to officials, the crash happened when a station wagon veered left off the highway, despite the section being a straight and level stretch of newly paved roadway. The vehicle traveled up a sloped median and then descended back into the southbound lanes, where it rolled multiple times. During the rollover, the driver—a 49-year-old Black Canyon City resident—was ejected from the vehicle. He was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released.
Three passengers were also in the car: a woman, a 17-year-old girl, and a four-year-old boy. The woman and teenager sustained injuries, though both are expected to recover. The young boy was reportedly uninjured.
Traffic on I-17 was severely impacted, with significant delays reported as vehicles diverted through the emergency lane while investigators worked at the crash site. DPS has confirmed that there were no immediate signs of mechanical failure or braking before the vehicle left the roadway. Additionally, there were no indications of driver impairment. The crash remains under investigation.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and wish the injured passengers a full and swift recovery. We also thank the first responders and law enforcement officials for their thorough response under difficult circumstances.
Rollover Crashes and Seatbelt Safety in Arizona
Rollover accidents are among the most dangerous types of vehicle crashes, especially when seatbelts are not used. The incident on I-17 near Black Canyon City highlights the critical role of proper seatbelt use and vehicle safety protocols.
Ejection from a vehicle is one of the leading causes of fatal injuries in rollover crashes. In Arizona, state safety officials have continually emphasized the importance of seatbelt usage—not only for drivers but for all passengers, regardless of where they are seated in the vehicle. Statistics show that unbelted occupants are significantly more likely to suffer fatal or serious injuries in a crash.
This incident also underscores the unpredictability of high-speed travel, even on well-maintained highways. The absence of mechanical failure or substance impairment suggests the crash may have stemmed from driver distraction, fatigue, or a brief loss of control. These factors are common in single-vehicle collisions, especially in rural or open highway areas where monotony and long stretches can reduce driver alertness.
For the survivors—particularly the teen and child passengers—support in the coming days and weeks may be essential. The trauma of being involved in a severe crash, especially one resulting in a fatality, can leave lasting emotional and physical impacts. Access to counseling, medical care, and legal guidance is often crucial to the recovery process.
