Brevard County, FL (January 13, 2025) – A tragic incident occurred early Monday morning on State Road 528 near Courtenay Parkway, where a 22-year-old Palm Bay man was struck and killed by a car. The crash happened around 12:20 AM, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).

FHP reported that a 2019 Honda Accord was traveling east in the merge lane for the exit ramp to Courtenay Parkway. The pedestrian was also walking east in the merge lane and was wearing dark clothing at the time. The driver, a 31-year-old Melbourne man, did not see the pedestrian and struck him with the front of the vehicle.

The pedestrian was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The driver and a 16-year-old Merritt Island girl who was a passenger in the vehicle were uninjured.

The investigation into the circumstances of the crash is ongoing. Further updates will be provided as new information becomes available. Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the victim during this difficult time.

Pedestrian Crashes in Florida

Florida frequently ranks as one of the most dangerous states for pedestrians, with incidents occurring often on highways and major roadways like SR-528. Nighttime crashes, particularly involving individuals wearing dark clothing, pose significant risks due to reduced visibility.

Drivers are reminded to stay vigilant, especially in poorly lit areas, and pedestrians are encouraged to use crosswalks, sidewalks, and reflective clothing to increase their visibility. Tragic incidents like this underscore the importance of increased safety measures for both motorists and pedestrians.

For those impacted by pedestrian-related crashes, seeking medical attention, thoroughly documenting the incident, and consulting with legal professionals can help navigate the aftermath and ensure appropriate measures are taken.

Local authorities in Brevard County remain committed to improving road safety and preventing similar tragedies in the future.
