Bronx, NY (March 6, 2023) – A total of seven people, including firefighters and at least one EMS worker, were injured in a major five-alarm blaze that occurred on Sunday, March 5th. The fire happened in the morning hours at the Concourse Food Plaza located at 2096 Grand Concourse at the intersection with 181st Street in the Bronx.
Authorities say that calls came in concerning a fire at the Plaza at around 10:40 a.m., and multiple first responders were dispatched to the scene. The fire, which rose to a five-alarm incident, required the assistance of over 200 firefighters and 50 units to extinguish the blaze.
While working at the scene, paramedics ultimately attended to a total of seven injured victims. The injured parties were reported as at least one civilian, an EMS worker, and firefighters. All injuries have been deemed non-life-threatening in nature, and those who were hurt are reportedly in stable condition at this time.
Officials with the FDNY were able to determine that the fire started with a lithium-ion battery from an E-bike that exploded near the supermarket. The incident remains under investigation as few other details are available at this time.
