Brookings County, SD – Fatal Head-On Crash at 478th Ave & 209th St

Brookings County, SD (May 9, 2025) – Emergency crews responded to a devastating two-vehicle collision on Monday afternoon that claimed one life and left another person seriously injured. The crash occurred around 4:51 p.m. near the intersection of 478th Avenue and 209th Street, approximately one mile north of Bushnell.

Emergency responders from Brookings County arrived promptly at the scene, where they found a 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe and a 1985 Freightliner Conventional FLC had collided head-on. Taylor Neil Johnson, a 34-year-old male from Hendricks, MN, was driving the Tahoe southbound in the northbound lane when the vehicle struck the oncoming Freightliner driven by 67-year-old Randall Dean Willmott of White, SD.

Despite the efforts of paramedics and fire crews, Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Willmott, who was wearing a seat belt, sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and received medical attention.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol has launched a full investigation into the incident. As of now, all released information remains preliminary pending further review. Our thoughts go out to the families and individuals affected by this tragic accident.

Head-On Collisions in South Dakota

Head-on collisions, such as the one that occurred north of Bushnell, often result in severe outcomes due to the direct force involved when two vehicles crash front-to-front. These types of crashes are particularly concerning in rural regions of South Dakota, where long stretches of highway and limited visibility can contribute to driver error or misjudgment.

The collision involving Taylor Johnson and Randall Willmott highlights several critical issues frequently seen in rural roadway incidents. Johnson’s presence in the wrong lane, for reasons still under investigation, ultimately led to a fatal outcome. Additionally, the absence of a seat belt may have worsened the severity of his injuries. While Willmott's use of a seat belt likely helped mitigate the impact of his injuries, the traumatic nature of a head-on crash can still cause significant harm even with proper restraints.

This incident also underscores the importance of public awareness and education surrounding lane discipline, fatigue, and distractions—common contributors to such accidents. Law enforcement often reminds drivers that staying alert and maintaining full attention, especially on two-lane rural roads, is essential for preventing tragedies like this.

In response to ongoing roadway safety challenges, South Dakota transportation and public safety officials regularly issue guidance to help reduce collisions. These include speed management, increased signage in high-risk areas, and community initiatives that promote responsible driving habits.

For those affected by this event, including Johnson’s loved ones and Willmott’s family, the road to recovery—whether physical, emotional, or legal—may be long and complex. Support from local resources, such as victim advocacy groups and medical follow-up, is crucial during this time.
