Canyon County, ID (June 9, 2025) – A 59-year-old man from Boise was killed late Saturday night in a three-vehicle crash at the intersection of Riverside Rd and Idaho Highway 55, just west of Nampa in Canyon County, according to Idaho State Police.
The crash took place at approximately 11:19 p.m. when the man, driving a 1999 Ford Escort westbound on Riverside Rd, failed to stop at the posted intersection. As his vehicle entered Hwy 55, it collided with a northbound 2025 Toyota Tundra. A third vehicle—a 2022 Honda Civic—then swerved off the roadway to avoid the wreck.
First responders rushed to the scene and located the driver of the Ford Escort with fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released pending notification of family.
A 29-year-old woman from Greenleaf, who was a passenger in the Escort, sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. The two occupants of the Toyota Tundra, a 47-year-old man and a 50-year-old woman from Pasco, Washington, were also treated for minor injuries at a local facility.
The driver of the Honda Civic—a 23-year-old woman from Port Aransas, Texas—was uninjured. According to ISP, all parties involved were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision.
The intersection remained closed for approximately 2.5 hours while emergency crews rendered aid, cleared debris, and conducted a preliminary investigation. Idaho State Police continues to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased, and we wish a full and speedy recovery to all those injured.
Fatal Highway Accidents in Idaho
Collisions like Saturday night’s deadly incident at Riverside Rd and Hwy 55 are an unfortunate reminder of how devastating traffic accidents can be—especially in rural or semi-rural parts of Canyon County. This intersection, located just north of the Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge, is heavily traveled and often presents visibility and timing challenges for drivers approaching at speed.
Failure to yield or stop at controlled intersections remains one of the most common causes of fatal crashes in Idaho. According to recent data, a significant percentage of rural highway fatalities occur at junctions where stop signs or other traffic controls are missed or ignored. Whether due to distraction, fatigue, or poor visibility, the consequences can be tragic.
In this case, the driver of the Ford Escort reportedly failed to stop, leading to a high-speed impact with the Toyota Tundra. Although all vehicle occupants were reportedly buckled in—a critical factor that may have reduced the severity of injuries—the force of the collision still proved fatal for one individual and sent others to the hospital.
The crash also serves as a reminder of the importance of defensive driving, particularly at night. Reduced visibility, nighttime fatigue, and the need to accurately judge distances at high-speed junctions all contribute to increased risk after dark. Drivers traveling through intersections like those near Nampa must exercise heightened caution, especially on routes frequently used by both local and regional traffic.
For those affected by this incident, support is crucial. From handling insurance claims to managing grief and medical recovery, families and survivors often need help navigating what comes next. Legal and victim support resources in Idaho are available to guide those impacted by serious accidents.
