Chamblee, GA (August 5, 2020) – A 79-year-old woman has lost her life and three others are injured after a 7-car crash in Chamblee that involved a stolen pick-up truck, according to responding officials. The crash took place this past Sunday, August 2, shortly after 3:00 p.m.
Chamblee authorities stated that Jonathan A. Sanchez, 20, of Tucker, faces murder charges as well as other charges in connection with the fatal collision that took the life of 79-year-old Judith Schonbak.
According to information provided by crash investigators, Sanchez stole a 2007 Ford F-150 from the parking lot of a store along Buford Highway at approximately 3:00 p.m on Sunday, August 2. The Ford he was attempting to steal was occupied by a young boy at the time of the heist whose father had run into the store and left him waiting in the truck. The boy’s age has not been disclosed.
In an attempt to flee, Sanchez struck two vehicles parked in the parking lot. At some point, the child was able to exit the truck and Sanchez again attempted to flee the scene. The young boy suffered injuries in the two parking lot collisions and was transported to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta for treatment.
The suspect then sped out of the parking lot, headed north on Buford Highway, and ran a red light at the intersection with Chamblee Tucker Road, causing yet another collision.
The stolen Ford F-150 collided with Judith Schonbak’s 2010 Honda Civic which had the right of way at the time of the crash, according to a spokesperson from the Georgia State Patrol.
The impact between the Civic and the Ford caused a chain reaction between four other nearby vehicles, which then also collided with one another. Two unidentified people were injured in the multi-car crash.
Sanchez fled the scene of the accident on foot but was apprehended and arrested by Georgia State Police about an hour later.
The truck thief currently faces charges including murder, first-degree vehicular homicide, failure to obey traffic lights, speeding, and felony hit-and-run. Investigators are also planning on charging him with cruelty to children, kidnapping, and theft by taking.
No further information has been released regarding the details of the wreck, and no one else involved has been identified at the present time.
