Chicago, IL (July 28, 2023) – A boat accident on Friday morning, July 28 on Lake Michigan, resulted in one victim’s death and six other injuries.
Rescue personnel from the Chicago Fire Department responded to the lakefront near Olive Park and the Playpen area. According to Jason Lach, Deputy District Chief of the Fire Department, the boat apparently hit a break wall and capsized with seven people onboard.
Authorities say that one person onboard got caught under the boat and drowned. One other person was able to swim to shore, and the five remaining victims were rescued by emergency responders.
One of those victims was transferred to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition, while the others were hospitalized in fair to serious condition at Northwestern and Stroger Hospitals.
Due to hazardous conditions, including heavy waves, police marine unit divers were initially unable to retrieve the deceased victim. Officials eventually recovered the woman’s body, but Chicago officers are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the incident.
Our deepest condolences are extended to the deceased woman’s family. Our thoughts are with the injured victims in hopes of their full recovery.
