Chicago, IL (July 28, 2023) – Authorities say a man died following an explosion that took place on Wednesday, July 26, at an Oak Park apartment complex where he resided.
According to Oak Park Fire Chief Ron Kobyleski, the 64-year-old man from Oak Park passed away after an explosion that occurred at 221 South Maple Avenue on Wednesday night. The victim was critically hurt in the explosion and was rushed in serious condition to Loyola University Medical Center.
Officials with the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said that the man was pronounced deceased on Thursday at about 8:30 p.m.
The Oak Park Fire Department is still investigating the incident and isn’t sure whether a gas leak or some other cause was behind the explosion. All six of the building’s units were nearly destroyed, leaving 12 other residents displaced.
