Clinton Township, NJ (May 23, 2025) – A 49-year-old Plainfield man was tragically killed early Thursday morning in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 78 West near milepost 21.8. The victim, identified by New Jersey State Police as Isaiah Hunter, died at the scene after his vehicle struck a tree and became engulfed in flames.
According to Sgt. Jeffrey Lebron of the NJSP, the crash occurred at approximately 2:13 a.m. A preliminary investigation revealed that a Hyundai Kona was traveling westbound when it veered off the roadway to the left, left the highway, and collided with a tree. The impact caused the vehicle to overturn and catch fire, resulting in a total loss.
Despite the efforts of emergency responders, Hunter sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. No other vehicles were involved in the incident, and no additional injuries were reported.
The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation. Officials have not confirmed whether speed, driver fatigue, mechanical failure, or roadway conditions may have contributed to the vehicle leaving the roadway.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Isaiah Hunter during this incredibly difficult time.
Fatal Single-Vehicle Crashes on New Jersey’s Interstates
This devastating incident on I-78 in Clinton Township reflects a common and deeply concerning roadway pattern: single-vehicle accidents involving loss of control, roadway departure, and fatal impact with fixed objects. These types of crashes, particularly those occurring in the early morning hours, are often tied to driver fatigue, high speeds, or limited nighttime visibility.
The stretch of I-78 near milepost 21.8 is a rural segment of highway bordered by wooded terrain and narrow shoulders. When vehicles leave the paved surface at high speeds, the consequences are often severe—especially when trees or embankments are nearby. The overturn and subsequent vehicle fire in this crash tragically removed any chance for survival.
Incidents involving vehicle fires introduce additional hazards for both victims and first responders. In many such cases, the destruction is so extensive that determining exact causes can take weeks of forensic review. Investigators will analyze data from the vehicle’s systems, road conditions, and physical evidence to better understand how and why the crash occurred.
For families affected by fatal crashes, the aftermath can be overwhelming—from the emotional toll to handling funeral costs, estate matters, and insurance complications. Victim support services, legal counsel, and grief resources can help provide structure and clarity in a time of shock and sorrow.
