Cortlandville, NY (December 29, 2022) – According to reports, a teen girl tragically lost her life in a car crash that left three other teen girls injured. It happened on Wednesday night, December 28th, at around 10:15 p.m.
Reports show that a Cortland County Sheriff’s Deputy saw an SUV go through a red light at the intersection of State Route 281 and West Main St. in the Town of Cortlandville. The SUV refused to stop when the deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop on NY 281. Due to the deputy’s failure to successfully negotiate a turn onto the Interstate 81 on-ramp in the Town of Homer, both the SUV and the vehicle he was driving lost control and collided.
A 16-year-old girl who was riding in the SUV’s back seat was declared deceased at the scene. The SUV’s driver, a 15-year-old girl, a 16-year-old girl, and a 15-year-old girl passenger were taken with critical injuries to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse. The sheriff’s deputy was sent to a nearby hospital for treatment after suffering non-life-threatening wounds.
After the collision, it was discovered that the involved SUV had been reported stolen from the Tompkins County William George Agency for Children’s Services a short time before the deputy attempted to pull it over.
The incident remains under investigation.
