Dayton, OH (April 2, 2025) – A violent early-morning crash involving two vehicles engaged in illegal street racing resulted in multiple hospitalizations, major property damage, and a critical gas leak Tuesday. The incident occurred shortly after 3:10 a.m. on April 1, near the intersection of Xenia Avenue and Boltin Street.
According to the Dayton Police Department and District Chief Tyler McCoy of the Dayton Fire Department, the crash stemmed from a high-speed drag race between a Hyundai Sonata and a Jeep Commander—both traveling westbound at speeds reaching 120 mph in a 30 mph residential zone. The Hyundai reportedly clipped the Jeep during the race, sending the Hyundai into a utility pole and disabling it.
The Jeep Commander veered off the roadway and slammed into one home before becoming airborne and crashing into a second residence. The vehicle ultimately came to rest inside that second house. A 65-year-old woman who was inside was critically injured, impaled by debris and trapped until she was extricated and rushed to the hospital. A 61-year-old man inside the same house was taken to the hospital as a precaution but was not injured.
The 23-year-old driver of the Jeep also sustained critical injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Meanwhile, the 17-year-old driver of the stolen Hyundai and his 15-year-old passenger initially fled the scene but were later apprehended. The teen driver was hospitalized and later released, while the younger passenger was arrested due to an outstanding warrant.
Authorities say both young males were believed to be intoxicated and neither held a valid driver’s license. The crash also triggered a dangerous gas leak when one of the vehicles struck a utility line, prompting emergency crews to evacuate the area. The leak was later controlled with assistance from the Kettering Fire Department.
The Dayton Police Department’s Traffic Services Unit is leading the investigation and urges anyone with additional information to contact Detective Jordan at 937-333-1149.

Street Racing and Community Impact in Ohio
Illegal drag racing continues to endanger lives and devastate neighborhoods across Ohio, and Tuesday’s crash on Xenia Avenue is a chilling example of the wide-reaching consequences. In this case, reckless speeding through a residential area resulted in not only vehicular destruction, but also severe harm to innocent residents inside their homes.
Street racing at triple the posted speed limit left one woman critically injured in her own living room, and placed several lives at risk—including children and elderly residents. This crash also prompted a hazardous gas leak, raising the threat of an explosion and complicating first responder efforts.
In addition to the physical injuries and emotional trauma, the crash left two homes structurally compromised, displacing families and placing additional strain on emergency resources. These types of collisions illustrate how the consequences of reckless driving extend far beyond the road and into the heart of residential life.
Ohio law imposes strict penalties for street racing, including criminal charges, license suspension, and vehicle impoundment. However, when minors are involved—especially in stolen vehicles and under the influence—further legal complexities emerge.
Community awareness, early intervention programs, and enhanced patrols are critical in combating illegal racing activity, particularly in urban corridors where residents remain most at risk.
