Pedestrian Hit-and-Runs in Urban Denver
Hit-and-run crashes involving pedestrians are among the most devastating and complex types of incidents in urban areas like Denver. Intersections such as Colfax Ave and Speer Blvd are especially high-risk due to heavy traffic volumes, multiple turning lanes, and high pedestrian activity throughout the day and night.
According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, pedestrian fatalities have risen significantly in recent years, with a notable portion involving hit-and-run drivers. Contributing factors often include distracted driving, excessive speed, and failure to yield at crosswalks.
Denver city officials have implemented several pedestrian safety initiatives, including signal timing adjustments, added crosswalk markings, and traffic calming measures. Still, driver accountability and public awareness are critical in reducing these preventable tragedies.
