Dover, NH (March 14, 2025) – A Massachusetts man was killed in a crash involving a dump truck on the Spaulding Turnpike Thursday morning.
At approximately 8:02 a.m., New Hampshire State Troopers responded to an automatic crash-detection alert from a cell phone just north of Exit 8 West. Additional 911 calls reported a collision between an SUV and a dump truck.
Preliminary investigations determined that a 2024 Western Star dump truck, driven by 55-year-old Jamie L. Joy of Pittsfield, was stopped in the right lane due to traffic congestion when it was struck from behind by a 2016 Lincoln Navigator. The driver of the SUV, 39-year-old James L. Stammers of Lynn, Massachusetts, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Joy was uninjured, and no passengers were in either vehicle.
The crash led to the closure of all northbound lanes on the Spaulding Turnpike, with traffic being diverted off Exit 8 West for approximately three and a half hours. The roadway was fully reopened at 11:36 a.m.
The New Hampshire State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction (C.A.R.) Unit and the Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Unit responded to assist with the investigation. Dover Police, Dover Fire and Rescue, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, and the New Hampshire Department of Transportation also provided support.
