Elmhurst, NY (December 20, 2020) – Three people were killed, four more sustained injuries, and two others are missing following a fire at a residence in Queens on Saturday, December 19th.
The FDNY was dispatched to the three-story house on 48th Avenue in the Elmhurst neighborhood at about 5:40 a.m.
Fire officials stated that three victims were pronounced dead at the scene. Two of the deceased victims were located on the second floor and the third was on the third floor.
Two other victims were transported via ambulances to local hospitals and two firefighters, including one who fell through the floor, also sustained injuries.
One official stated that they were informed that eight people lived in the house, two of whom are still unaccounted for. It is unclear whether or not they were home when the fire broke out.
The large size of the fire caused the roof to collapse into the top floor. Another part of the roof collapsed onto the second floor. Fire crews are still searching the rubble for the missing people.
Over 140 firefighters attended the three-alarm fire.

Line-of-Duty Injuries in Rochester
For the most part, any worker who is able to benefit from worker’s compensation due to an injury they suffered while at work is not allowed to sue their employer for the same injuries. New York firefighters who are injured in the line of duty, however, are ineligible for workers’ compensation. Their medical expenses and lost wages are dealt with by the municipality that employs them. This means that since New York firefighters are not provided the security of worker’s compensation, they are entitled to file a personal injury claim against their employer for any injuries they sustained in a line-of-duty accident in New York.
