Erwin, NY – 19-Year-Old Killed in Motorbike Crash on Victory Hwy Involving Pickup Truck

Erwin, NY (April 21, 2025) – A 19-year-old man tragically lost his life Saturday morning following a collision between his electric motorbike and a pickup truck hauling a trailer in the town of Erwin, according to the New York State Police. The fatal crash occurred around 11:24 a.m. on April 19 along Victory Highway in Steuben County.

According to a press release by Trooper Lynnea Crane, the young man was riding an electric motorbike when he entered the roadway from a residential property on Victory Highway. He failed to yield the right of way to an oncoming 2019 Dodge pickup truck, which was traveling east and towing a trailer at the time of the incident.

The driver of the truck, 31-year-old Christopher E. Tyler of Painted Post, was unable to avoid the collision. The motorbike struck the truck, and the impact caused life-threatening injuries to the 19-year-old rider. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, and the victim was airlifted to Guthrie Corning Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Tyler was not injured in the crash and remained at the scene to cooperate with the investigation. Authorities have not yet released the name of the deceased, pending notification of next of kin.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the young man who lost his life in this heartbreaking accident.

Electric Motorbike Incidents in Rural New York

This tragic crash in Erwin underscores the importance of right-of-way rules and heightened awareness when operating electric motorbikes or other non-traditional vehicles on rural roadways. Unlike traditional motorcycles, electric bikes may be quieter and less visible, potentially making them more difficult for oncoming drivers to detect — especially when they enter the road unexpectedly or from private property.

The failure to yield the right of way is a leading cause of serious collisions in New York State. When motorbikes or bicycles enter traffic without sufficient clearance, even careful drivers in larger vehicles may be unable to react in time to prevent a crash. In rural areas like Steuben County, where highways often have higher speed limits and limited visibility due to elevation or vegetation, the risks are especially pronounced.

Motorbike riders and motorists alike are urged to practice vigilant road-sharing habits, obey all traffic laws, and ensure proper signaling and visibility when entering public roads. Family members dealing with the aftermath of such a loss may need support services ranging from grief counseling to legal consultation, particularly in situations where fault, insurance, or liability may be questioned.
