Eustis, FL (December 12, 2024) – A tragic collision involving a semi-truck, a Nissan Sentra, and a Ford E-450 van claimed the life of an 89-year-old woman Wednesday afternoon on State Road 44 near Forest Ridge Rd. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) responded to the scene at approximately 1:47 p.m.
According to an FHP news release, a semitractor-trailer with a blue cab and silver trailer was traveling eastbound on SR-44 when it attempted to slow for traffic ahead. The trailer veered into the westbound lane, striking a 2014 Nissan Sentra. The impact sent the Nissan into the eastbound lane, where it collided head-on with a 2018 Ford E-450 van carrying 12 passengers.
The driver of the Nissan, an elderly woman from Eustis, was airlifted to a nearby hospital but later succumbed to her injuries. Four passengers in the Ford van, all residents of Orange City ranging in age from 76 to 81, sustained minor injuries and were transported to the hospital for treatment. The van’s driver, a 72-year-old man from DeBary, was not injured.
The driver of the semi-truck, a 58-year-old Miami man, continued driving eastbound after the collision. He was later stopped by troopers, claiming he was unaware of the crash. The semi-truck has been impounded as evidence, and charges are pending as the investigation continues.
Traffic was significantly disrupted in both directions on SR-44 following the crash, with diversions at County Rd 42 and Royal Trails Blvd. FHP troopers worked to process the scene and restore traffic flow.
Fatal Collisions and Road Safety in Florida
Accidents involving commercial vehicles like semi-trucks often result in devastating outcomes due to the size and weight of these vehicles. The crash on SR-44 near Forest Ridge Rd is a stark reminder of the potential for severe consequences when such vehicles lose control. In this case, the involvement of multiple vehicles and a high passenger count compounded the complexity of the incident.
Florida’s highways see a significant number of accidents each year, with commercial vehicle crashes being particularly concerning. Common factors in these accidents include driver fatigue, distracted driving, and improper maintenance. Investigations like the one currently underway by FHP aim to identify the causes and prevent future occurrences.
For those affected by fatal collisions, seeking legal and emotional support is crucial. Families and victims may face extensive medical expenses, loss of income, and emotional trauma. Engaging legal professionals can help navigate claims and hold responsible parties accountable.
