Fairfax County, VA – Man Strikes Police Cruiser While Intoxicated

Fairfax County, VA (August 1, 2020) – A man rear-ended a police cruiser occupied by a police officer yesterday morning, causing injuries to the officer. 

The crash took place at approximately 4:00 a.m. on Friday, July 31 when Virginia state trooper J. Kim was finishing up a traffic stop on Interstate 395 just north of Edsall Road in Springfield. As he was in his vehicle, a 2019 Jeep SUV left the roadway and collided with Kim’s cruiser. 

Kim was transported to Fairfax Inova Hospital for treatment of injuries he sustained in the wreck. 

The driver of the Jeep was later identified as Eyasu Urgesa Hayu, 32, of Woodbridge, Virginia. 

Hayu was arrested at the scene of the crash and transported to Fairfax Adult Detention Center. He faces criminal charges including a DUI due to causing the crash and the officer’s injuries while being intoxicated.

No further details have been released regarding the circumstances of the accident. 

The officer’s cruiser was badly damaged on the rear end of the vehicle. 

A police investigation will be carried out.
