Fancy Farm, KY (October 12, 2024) – A serious hit-and-run accident occurred just before noon on Friday, October 11, when an Amish buggy was struck by a vehicle on Kentucky Highway 80 West, approximately three miles east of Fancy Farm. The collision resulted in serious injuries to an occupant of the buggy and also affected the horse involved in the incident.
According to reports, the driver of the vehicle fled the scene heading west after the crash. The impact caused the horse to break away from the wreckage, but it was later located and caught a few miles away. Emergency services were called to the scene, and one occupant of the horse-drawn buggy was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Shortly after the accident, the Carlisle County Sheriff's Office was notified of the vehicle description and instructed to be on the lookout for the suspect vehicle. The vehicle was located soon afterward, and the driver was found to be highly intoxicated, operating on a DUI-suspended license, and had multiple prior DUI convictions. An arrest was made in connection with the incident.
Our thoughts are with the injured occupant of the buggy as they receive medical care.
Traffic Accidents in Kentucky
Traffic accidents involving horse-drawn vehicles are a significant concern in rural areas of Kentucky, where Amish communities are prevalent. These incidents can lead to severe injuries due to the lack of protection for occupants of buggies compared to motor vehicles.
Common causes of accidents involving horse-drawn vehicles include:
- Distracted Driving: Drivers who are not paying attention to the road may fail to see slower-moving buggies.
- Impaired Driving: Alcohol and drugs can severely impair a driver’s ability to operate a vehicle safely, increasing the risk of collisions.
- Speeding: Excessive speed reduces a driver’s ability to react quickly to obstacles, including horse-drawn vehicles.
To enhance safety for all road users, it is crucial for drivers to remain vigilant and adhere to traffic laws. Here are some safety tips for drivers:
- Be Aware of Horse-Drawn Vehicles: Watch for buggies, especially in rural areas, and be prepared to slow down.
- Avoid Distractions: Stay focused on the road and avoid using mobile devices while driving.
- Obey Speed Limits: Reducing speed in areas where horse-drawn vehicles are common can help prevent accidents.
- Never Drive Under the Influence: Always designate a sober driver or use alternative transportation if consuming alcohol.
