North Dakota Motorcycle Crashes

Fargo ND - Motorcyclist Injured in Crash with Car on Main AveAccording to information provided by the Governor’s Highway Safety Association, per total miles driven, motorcyclists are approximately 26 times more likely to be killed in a traffic accident than sedan occupants. Motorcycles are not as stable as four-wheeled vehicles and they lack the outer protective structure of a regular sedan that normally minimizes occupant injury when accidents occur. The result is significantly higher fatality rates for motorcyclists in the event of a collision.

Motorcycles make up only three percent of the total number of registered vehicles in the nation, and less than one percent of vehicle miles traveled. That being said, they comprise approximately 15% of all traffic accident fatalities in the United States, a percentage that has grown in recent years. Motorcycle accident fatalities also accounted for 15% of the statewide fatality rate in North Dakota in 2018.

Distracted driving accounts for a large percentage of motorcycle accidents in North Dakota. This negligent human behavior was attributed to approximately 1,400 accidents in North Dakota in 2018. About 3,166 individuals nationwide lost their lives due to driver distraction in 2018, and approximately 9% of fatal accidents in 2018 in the United States were due to distracted driving.
