Farmington, NM (October 10, 2020) – A man from Farmington was arrested for driving under the influence and killing a woman, admitting to the police that he was sending a text when the accident happened.
39-year-old Bradley Harris has been accused of driving while intoxicated and killing Teresa Mae Smith, 52, a resident of Gallup, by hitting her with his car on Tuesday, October 6th as indicated by the probable cause statement.
According to police reports, at about 11:30 p.m., police responded to calls of a possible body found.
On arrival, an officer found Smith’s body in the road near the intersection of Brookside Drive and East 20th Street.
Emergency medical personnel on the scene were able to confirm the fatality.
Harris’ father, who was also present at the scene, said his son had arrived home about 15 minutes ago and admitted he might have struck someone or something while he was driving.
He went to investigate and located Smith’s body. He then waited for the police.
A visit to the Harris residence revealed a Chevy Captiva with front-end damage. Harris was found in the garage.
Harris stated to the police that he hit something in the roadway while he was driving. He also stated that he didn’t know what he hit, alleging he had pulled over and glanced around but saw nothing.
This accident is still under investigation by the Farmington Police Department.
