What Can Contribute to Same-Direction Highway Traffic Events?
On highways where multiple vehicles travel in the same direction, close spacing and sudden changes in speed can create risks. When one vehicle slows or shifts unexpectedly, following vehicles may have limited time to react safely.
Large vehicles, such as cargo trucks, may require longer stopping distances, which can affect movement patterns in flowing traffic. Smaller vehicles may also experience stability challenges when changing lanes or quickly adjusting speed.
Roadway design, driver attention, and traffic density can all influence how vehicles interact on high-speed routes. Even when visibility is clear and driving conditions are stable, small timing differences between vehicles can lead to complex multi-vehicle interactions that require careful maneuvering to avoid further complications.
