Fredonia, KS (September 13, 2023) – A severe collision happened around 8:30 a.m. on Highway 400 near mile marker 368 on Tuesday, September 12, 2023.

Emergency crews responded to the 2-vehicle crash 5 miles east of Fredonia.

Drake D. Owens, 62, drove a 2024 IC Bus west, while Elizabeth E. Jeffers, 70, drove a 2004 Chrysler 300 east.

Owens tried passing a semi-truck, crossing into Jeffers’ lane, causing a direct collision.

Jeffers and passenger Janette Eslick, 68, both of Fredonia, sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Wesley Medical Center.

Owens reported pain and was taken to Fredonia Regional Hospital.

No update on bus occupants is available.

The investigation is still ongoing.
