Gilbert, AZ (January 13, 2025) – An 88-year-old woman tragically lost her life after a vehicle crashed into a senior care facility in Gilbert on Friday night. The incident occurred around 9:55 PM near the 700 block of Lindsay Road, according to Gilbert Police.
Authorities reported that 33-year-old Michael Degolier drove his vehicle into the side of the facility, striking the unit where Mary Lillian Haapala was located. Haapala was pronounced dead at the scene.
Degolier fled the scene but was later located and arrested by police. He faces charges including second-degree murder, failure to remain at the scene of an accident involving death or serious physical injury, and failure to render aid. Preliminary findings suggest that impairment may have been a factor in the crash, according to the Gilbert Police Department.
