Grand Haven, MI (May 18, 2025) – Medics and fire crews worked to assist those suffering from injuries after a serious rollover crash occurred Saturday near the intersection of US 31 and Hayes St. According to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, the crash took place when a pickup truck ran a red light and collided with a car traveling eastbound on Hayes.
The impact caused the pickup truck to overturn, eventually coming to rest on its roof. Emergency responders were quickly on the scene to provide care and transport the injured parties to the hospital. The truck’s driver and passenger were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The two occupants of the car also sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene, deputies reported.
Authorities confirmed that the intersection was temporarily shut down to allow for vehicle recovery and investigative procedures. Traffic delays were reported in the area as crews worked to clear the wreckage and assess the scene.
The crash remains under active investigation by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, which is reviewing evidence and witness accounts to determine the precise circumstances that led to the red-light violation and subsequent rollover.

Rollover Accidents in Michigan
Rollover accidents, like the one that occurred near US 31 and Hayes St, are among the most dangerous types of vehicle collisions. Although they make up a smaller percentage of total crashes, they are disproportionately responsible for severe injuries and fatalities due to the violent motion and potential for ejection or roof collapse.
In Michigan, intersections involving major highways such as US 31 are particularly hazardous due to higher travel speeds and complex traffic flows. Red-light violations remain a leading cause of intersection-related accidents and are often tied to driver inattention or speeding.
Victims of rollover accidents may face long recovery times, ongoing physical therapy, and significant financial burdens. Under Michigan’s auto insurance laws, those injured in a crash are entitled to personal injury protection (PIP) benefits, but additional compensation may be available if another driver is found to be at fault. This includes reimbursement for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
Legal representation can be especially beneficial when dealing with more complex cases involving rollovers or disputed liability. Investigations may involve examining traffic light sequences, vehicle data, and surveillance footage to reconstruct the crash timeline and establish responsibility.
As investigations continue, drivers are urged to exercise caution at intersections, obey traffic signals, and remain vigilant, particularly when approaching highway corridors like US 31. Public safety officials also emphasize the importance of seatbelt use, which significantly reduces the risk of injury in rollover events.
