Hamilton County, IA (May 21, 2025) – A fatal accident involving a car, an SUV, and two semi-trucks occurred on Tuesday around 2:42 p.m. on Interstate 35 near mile marker 147, between Ames and Clear Lake. Reed Peterson, 68, of Mason City, was driving a 2019 Ford Fiesta northbound when his vehicle crossed the median and collided with the rear trailer tires of a 2000 Volvo semi driven by Serghei Gornostali, 37, of Bartlett, Illinois.
The Ford Fiesta was then struck by a 2021 Freightliner semi driven by Funugo Nsanzinfura, 29, of Louisville, Kentucky, an impact that tore the Fiesta’s engine block out. Shortly after, a 2016 GMC Yukon operated by Caleb Jacobsen, 23, of Dows, struck the detached engine and the Freightliner semi. Both the Yukon and Freightliner semi ended up in the west ditch, while the Volvo semi came to rest on the shoulder. The Fiesta stopped in the inside lane.
Emergency personnel attended the scene promptly. Reed Peterson was pronounced deceased at the scene. The other drivers sustained injuries but were treated and released. Tony’s Tire and Central Iowa Towing assisted with the cleanup.
Our sympathies go out to the family and friends of Mr. Peterson during this difficult time. The Iowa State Patrol continues to investigate the cause of this serious collision.
Interstate Accidents and Safety in Iowa
Highway crashes involving multiple vehicles, especially semis, can be devastating due to the size and momentum of large trucks. I-35 is a heavily traveled route requiring careful attention to lane discipline and speed control.
Drivers should always maintain safe distances and avoid sudden maneuvers to prevent crossing medians or losing control. Proper vehicle maintenance and awareness of road conditions are also crucial to reducing accidents.
