Hampton, FL (May 13, 2025) – A deadly single-vehicle crash in Bradford County claimed the life of one person early Tuesday morning after their SUV veered off the road and caught fire, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
Troopers reported that the crash occurred around 2:00 a.m. on Southeast 109th Street near 45th Avenue. The SUV was traveling southbound when the driver lost control, veered off the road, and attempted to correct the course. However, the overcorrection caused the vehicle to leave the shoulder and strike a tree.
The impact triggered a fiery explosion, with flames quickly engulfing the SUV. Tragically, the driver was trapped inside and died at the scene. FHP has not yet released the identity or age of the victim, pending next-of-kin notification.
Emergency responders from local fire and rescue departments arrived swiftly, but the blaze had already consumed much of the vehicle. The roadway was closed for several hours during the investigation and cleanup.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the individual who lost their life in this heartbreaking incident.
Fiery Single-Vehicle Crashes in Florida
Crashes involving fire are particularly devastating, especially when they occur on rural roads during early morning hours. SE 109th St, like many secondary routes in Bradford County, has limited lighting and narrow shoulders. These conditions, combined with fatigue or overcorrection, can significantly increase the risk of serious or fatal crashes.
When a vehicle strikes a tree or fixed object, the sudden deceleration can cause catastrophic damage, rupturing fuel lines or electrical components and triggering fires. If a driver is trapped due to the force of the impact or mechanical failure, survival becomes extremely unlikely, particularly when emergency crews are miles away.
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the exact circumstances of this crash, including potential contributing factors such as:
- Speed
- Driver fatigue
- Weather or road conditions
- Mechanical failure
For families affected by such tragedies, the aftermath is filled with emotional grief, unexpected expenses, and unanswered questions. Access to grief counseling, financial assistance, and legal support can help begin the process of healing and ensure the loved one’s memory is honored with care.
