Harrison County, IA (March 26, 2025) – A serious crash early Monday morning on Interstate 29 in Harrison County left two people injured, including a driver from Bellevue, Nebraska. The collision occurred around 12:45 a.m. near Mile Marker 92 and involved a passenger vehicle and a tractor-trailer.
According to a report from the Iowa State Patrol, the crash began when a Toyota driven by the Bellevue man lost control, swerving into the left lane and then back into the right. A tractor-trailer traveling nearby attempted to avoid the swerving Toyota but ultimately struck the rear of the vehicle.
The force of the impact sent both vehicles into a ditch, with the tractor-trailer overturning onto its driver’s side. Emergency responders were dispatched quickly to the scene to assess the situation and assist the injured parties.
The driver of the Toyota sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Nebraska Medicine for advanced care. The tractor-trailer driver was also injured and transported to Missouri Valley Hospital. No additional occupants were reported in either vehicle.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash. Weather conditions, road surface issues, and possible fatigue may be considered as contributing factors, though no official conclusions have been released.
Our thoughts are with both injured drivers, and we hope for their full and speedy recoveries.
Dangers of Late-Night Highway Collisions in Iowa
Monday’s injury crash on I-29 highlights the risks drivers face on rural interstate highways, particularly during the overnight hours. With lower visibility, driver fatigue, and variable road conditions, the likelihood of loss-of-control incidents increases significantly after midnight.
Interstate 29 runs through sparsely populated areas in western Iowa, where response times and hospital access can be more challenging than in urban centers. In this case, air transport was required to ensure the more seriously injured driver received urgent medical care.
Crashes involving tractor-trailers are often severe due to the size and weight of the vehicles. Even when evasive maneuvers are attempted, the stopping distance and reaction time for a semi-truck make it difficult to avoid smaller passenger vehicles, particularly when erratic movement is involved.
For those injured in highway crashes, the aftermath can be both physically and financially draining. Emergency care, rehabilitation, lost income, and vehicle replacement costs all add to the burden. It’s critical that victims receive proper medical care and understand their legal rights to pursue compensation if negligence or external factors contributed to the crash.
