Hartland Township, MI (December 26, 2024) – A tragic hit-and-run accident claimed the life of a 22-year-old Howell man who was struck by a pickup truck while riding his bicycle early Monday morning. The incident occurred around 1:40 a.m. on Old US-23 near Bergin Rd as the man was traveling southbound on his way home from work.
Michigan State Police (MSP) reported that the driver of the pickup truck fled the scene after the collision. The crash was discovered and reported by a passerby, as there were no witnesses present. Emergency responders pronounced the bicyclist deceased at the scene.
Troopers, in collaboration with deputies from the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office and Hamburg Township Police, conducted an investigation based on car parts left at the scene and other evidence. They identified the suspect as a 63-year-old Brighton man driving a 2023 white Ford F-150. The suspect was located and questioned within two hours of the crash.
It remains unclear whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the collision. The investigation is ongoing, and MSP plans to submit a report to the Livingston County Prosecutor’s Office to determine if charges will be filed. Authorities are encouraging anyone with additional information about the incident to contact MSP’s Brighton Post.

Bicycle Accidents and Hit-and-Runs in Michigan
Bicycle accidents, particularly hit-and-run incidents, represent a grave concern on Michigan roadways. Cyclists are particularly vulnerable in collisions with motor vehicles, often suffering fatal or severe injuries. Roads like Old US-23 in Hartland Township, with limited lighting during overnight hours, can pose significant risks to cyclists.
The Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning highlights that hit-and-run accidents account for a growing percentage of traffic fatalities. Contributing factors often include distracted driving, speeding, or impaired operation, though specific causes remain under investigation in this case.
