Iona, ID (October 23, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred late Tuesday night on US Highway 26 in Bonneville County, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. At approximately 11:59 p.m., Idaho State Police responded to a two-vehicle collision at milepost 340, located north of Iona.
According to preliminary reports, a white Hyundai Sonata, driven by a teenage male from Idaho, was traveling eastbound on US26 when it crossed the center line and collided head-on with a blue Dodge pickup truck driven by 28-year-old Austin Blakely, who was traveling westbound. The impact of the crash was severe, and both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. Tragically, neither individual was wearing their seat belt at the time of the accident.
Emergency responders worked diligently to clear the area, which resulted in both directions of the highway being blocked for approximately 5 hours and 20 minutes. The Idaho State Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding this devastating incident.
