Islip, NY (July 8, 2023) – A man lost his life in a fatal five-car accident that happened in Islip. Reports show the wreck occurred on Monday morning, July 3 at around 8:50 a.m.
Police say the collision occurred when a 2023 Mack garbage truck was headed east on Express Drive South. For reasons unknown, a 2019 Honda rear-ended a Honda Accord that was waiting at a red light at the intersection of Motor Parkway.
The truck then side-swept a 2018 Thomas Built school bus that rear-ended a 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee as a result. The Jeep then became lodged in front of the garbage truck and struck a 2009 Toyota Matrix, causing the Toyota to spin and strike a utility pole.
The driver of the Accord was pronounced deceased on-site. The driver was identified as 24-year-old Joseph Kelly. The Toyota and Jeep drivers were sent to the hospital with injuries.
