Islip, NY (February 10, 2023) – A boat explosion left one man seriously injured in the town of Islip, Long Island. The near-fatal incident was reported at approximately 10:15 p.m. on Thursday night, February 9th.
Firefighters and other first responders were notified of an explosion at Islip Canal, where they immediately arrived to discover a strong gas odor. Police officials boarded the vessel, where they were able to locate a leaking propane tank, which was immediately disabled and secured.
Authorities found a 44-year-old man from Islip injured on the boat and safely carried him to shore. First responders airlifted the victim to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators were able to determine that the explosion occurred on the boat while it was tied to a dock along the canal, which is located on Main Street. The cause of the explosion is actively being investigated.
No details on the condition of the victim are presently available.
