Jasper, TX (January 11, 2025) – Two people sustained injuries and are undergoing treatment following a head-on collision involving two vehicles on Highway 63, west of Jasper. The crash occurred on Friday shortly before 5:00 p.m. and led to a temporary road closure as emergency crews worked to assist the injured and clear the scene.
Passing motorists described arriving at the crash site to find one vehicle, a 2014 Jeep Cherokee, overturned and on fire, with its driver still trapped inside. The second vehicle, a 2014 Nissan two-door, also had its driver trapped. Witnesses quickly intervened to assist. One individual used dirt and mud to extinguish the flames on the Jeep before pulling the driver to safety, while another motorist’s wife helped rescue the driver from the Nissan.
Both drivers received initial care at the scene from Allegiance EMS and volunteers with the Angelina River Fire Department before being transported to hospitals for further treatment. The driver of the Jeep, identified as 46-year-old Larry Beck of Lufkin, was taken to Jasper Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Nissan, 67-year-old Dianne Balusek of Zavalla, was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital in Lufkin, where she also received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.
The Texas Department of Public Safety conducted a preliminary investigation, revealing that the driver of the Jeep disregarded a no-passing zone, entered the westbound lane, and struck the Nissan head-on. The section of Highway 63 West between County Road 254 (Peachtree Rd) and County Road 097 was blocked for an extended period while emergency responders tended to the injured and removed the wreckage.
We wish a swift recovery for those involved.
