Jeff Davis Parish, LA (September 18, 2023) – A deadly head-on collision occurred on Highway 26 and Hillias Road around 8:15 p.m. on Sunday, September 17, 2023.

Troop D spokesperson, Trooper First Class Derek Senegal, confirmed that the crash involved a 2014 GMC pickup and a 2006 GMC Envoy.

The pickup, driven by 65-year-old Jeffery L.

Meche of Jennings, crossed the center line and hit the SUV driven by 29-year-old Chelsey Benoit.

Benoit, unbuckled during the accident, died at a hospital.

Meche, also without a seatbelt, got airlifted to a Lafayette hospital with moderate injuries.

Toxicology tests are pending for both drivers.

The investigation is still ongoing.
