Kearney, NE – Serious Injury Crash Closes 30th Ave. Overpass

December 11, 2024

Kearney, NE (December 11, 2024) – A serious injury crash occurred on the 30th Avenue overpass in Kearney, closing the roadway in both directions, according to the Kearney Police Department (KPD). The accident, which took place around 7:30 PM on icy road conditions, involved two vehicles.

Preliminary investigations by Sgt. Brad Newell of the KPD indicate that a southbound vehicle lost control on the icy overpass, crossing the center line and colliding with a northbound vehicle. The northbound vehicle was driven by a 31-year-old woman with an infant passenger. While the infant, secured in a child safety seat, was unharmed, the woman suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The southbound vehicle was driven by an 18-year-old man who also sustained serious injuries.

Both drivers were transported to a local hospital in Kearney for treatment. Authorities continue to investigate the incident, and updates will follow as more information becomes available. Our thoughts are with the injured individuals, and we wish them a full recovery.

Winter Road Safety in Nebraska

The crash on the 30th Avenue overpass in Kearney emphasizes the risks associated with driving in icy conditions. Nebraska winters often bring hazardous road conditions that require heightened caution from drivers. Black ice, snow, and reduced visibility can lead to dangerous situations, as seen in this recent accident.

Drivers are advised to reduce speeds, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, and ensure that their cars are equipped with winter tires and emergency supplies. For those involved in winter accidents, seeking medical evaluation and documenting the scene are critical steps in the aftermath.
