Knox County, TN – Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash on Maynardville Hwy Near Loyston Rd

June 14, 2025

Knox County, TN (June 14, 2025) – A tragic three-vehicle crash occurred Friday evening on Maynardville Hwy near Loyston Rd, close to the Union County line, resulting in one fatality and serious injuries to three others. The incident was reported just before 8 p.m., prompting a full emergency response from Rural Metro Fire and Knox County law enforcement.

Medics and fire crews worked to assist those suffering from injuries after the collision. According to officials, three people were transported to a local hospital for treatment, while one individual was pronounced dead at the scene. The roadway was entirely blocked for several hours as emergency personnel responded and began an initial investigation.

Based on the scene and vehicle damage, Rural Metro emergency teams stated that speed is believed to have played a significant role in the crash. The Knox County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Accident Reconstruction team, known as TANGO, has taken over the investigation to determine the exact cause of the collision.

Out of respect for the families, officials have not released the names of those involved. No photographs or identifying vehicle information has been shared at this time. The Tennessee Department of Transportation confirmed that as of 10 p.m., Maynardville Hwy remained closed in both directions at Loyston Rd while investigators continued their work.

Our thoughts are with those affected by this tragic accident.

Speed and Rural Highway Risks in Tennessee

Crashes on rural highways like Maynardville Hwy often result in severe outcomes due to higher travel speeds, limited lighting, and fewer immediate response options. The stretch near Loyston Rd, situated near county lines, can see a mix of local traffic and through travelers, increasing the complexity of driving conditions, especially after dark.

According to data from the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security, speeding remains one of the leading contributors to fatal crashes in rural areas. While urban roads may have congestion that naturally slows drivers, rural highways allow for higher speeds—and a greater risk of catastrophic outcomes when accidents occur.

In the aftermath of such tragic incidents, families and injured victims are often left to navigate complex medical and legal challenges. It’s essential to act quickly to document injuries, communicate with investigators, and obtain appropriate legal guidance to help manage the burdens that follow.
