Lee County, MS – Two Injured in Gas Explosion During Repair Work

March 13, 2025

Lee County, MS (March 13, 2025) – A gas explosion in Lee County left at least two workers injured on Thursday while they were attempting to repair a leak, according to local officials.

A Lee County supervisor reported that the explosion occurred while Atmos Energy workers were conducting repairs. The blast was so intense that it reportedly blew off the workers’ clothing. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, and the injured individuals were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Their current conditions have not been disclosed.

Residents in the surrounding area reported hearing the explosion, with some describing it as sounding like "a jetplane." The incident also caused significant disruptions, cutting off gas service to more than 20,000 customers.

Authorities are warning individuals in the area not to burn anything due to the possibility of gas lingering in the air. Public Service Commission (PSC) Commissioner Chris Brown stated that while repairs are expected to be completed soon, it will take additional time to fully restore service to all affected customers. Officials have urged the public to avoid the area until further notice.

The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.

Our thoughts are with the injured workers, and we hope for their full recovery.

Gas Explosions and Workplace Injuries in Mississippi

Gas-related explosions can lead to devastating injuries, including burns, respiratory issues, and long-term trauma. Incidents like this often occur when leaks go undetected or when gas lines are compromised during repairs. The risk of explosion is heightened in industrial settings and residential areas where gas service is widely used.

For injured workers, immediate medical care is critical, as burn injuries and exposure to toxic gases can have lasting effects. Additionally, victims of workplace accidents may have legal rights to seek compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and ongoing care, especially if negligence or unsafe working conditions played a role in the explosion.
