Lee County, MS (March 13, 2025) – A gas explosion in Lee County left at least two workers injured on Thursday while they were attempting to repair a leak, according to local officials.
A Lee County supervisor reported that the explosion occurred while Atmos Energy workers were conducting repairs. The blast was so intense that it reportedly blew off the workers’ clothing. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, and the injured individuals were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Their current conditions have not been disclosed.
Residents in the surrounding area reported hearing the explosion, with some describing it as sounding like "a jetplane." The incident also caused significant disruptions, cutting off gas service to more than 20,000 customers.
Authorities are warning individuals in the area not to burn anything due to the possibility of gas lingering in the air. Public Service Commission (PSC) Commissioner Chris Brown stated that while repairs are expected to be completed soon, it will take additional time to fully restore service to all affected customers. Officials have urged the public to avoid the area until further notice.
The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
Our thoughts are with the injured workers, and we hope for their full recovery.
