LeFlore County, OK – Pedestrian Killed in Crash on US-271 Near 440th Ave

May 24, 2025

LeFlore County, OK (May 23, 2025) – A tragic pedestrian crash claimed the life of 49-year-old Adrian Johnico Wednesday night along US-271 near 440th Avenue, just south of Talihina, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP).

The incident occurred at approximately 9:52 p.m., and emergency responders transported Johnico to Choctaw Nation Healthcare in Talihina, where he was later pronounced dead at 1:55 p.m. the following day due to injuries sustained in the collision.

OHP identified the driver involved as 76-year-old Vearle Maple, who was operating a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado. Maple was also taken to Choctaw Nation Healthcare for treatment of minor injuries. Authorities also noted that an unoccupied 2015 GMC Sierra was involved in the crash, though its role has not yet been fully clarified.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation, and OHP has not released further details regarding how the crash unfolded or whether any citations are expected.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Adrian Johnico during this incredibly difficult time.

Pedestrian Fatalities and Rural Roadway Risks in Oklahoma

This fatal crash on US-271, a rural highway in LeFlore County, highlights the heightened danger pedestrians face in low-light, high-speed environments. Nighttime visibility is a consistent factor in fatal pedestrian crashes, especially in rural areas where lighting is limited and driver reaction times are reduced.

While the circumstances surrounding the involvement of the unoccupied vehicle remain under review, the combination of a moving pickup truck and pedestrian activity at night creates a high-risk situation. The presence of multiple vehicles, including one unattended, may complicate the investigation into how the tragedy occurred.

Pedestrian fatalities often leave families struggling with sudden grief and unanswered questions. In many cases, victims’ loved ones also face financial stress from funeral costs, loss of support, and prolonged investigations. Support from legal professionals and victim advocacy resources can provide guidance and clarity during these overwhelming times.

If your family has experienced a loss due to a pedestrian crash or rural highway collision, it’s important to understand your rights and explore the resources available to help you move forward.
