Leighton, IA (October 12, 2024) – A tragic two-vehicle accident occurred on Highway 163 near Leighton on the evening of October 11, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. According to the Iowa State Patrol, the crash took place at approximately 8:47 PM when a Subaru Outback, driven by 43-year-old Sy Yang of Oskaloosa, was traveling eastbound near the intersection of Highland Avenue. The vehicle rear-ended a farm implement driven by 68-year-old Gary Lisk, also of Oskaloosa.
The impact of the crash caused “front compartment intrusion,” leading to severe injuries for the occupants of the Subaru. Both Sy Yang and 45-year-old Rachel Anne Yang succumbed to their injuries as a result of the collision. Additionally, two other passengers in the Subaru, Kaylah Yang, 22, and Benjamin Yang, 18, were transported to the hospital with injuries by Mahaska County Ambulance.
Emergency responders from the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene, while the Pella Fire Department was initially paged for support but was later called off. In the aftermath of the crash, Highway 163 was closed for several hours in the eastbound lanes to allow for investigation and cleanup.
