Licking County, OH (May 21, 2025) – A tragic collision on State Route 37 near Refugee Road Tuesday afternoon claimed the life of a 21-year-old woman and left two others injured, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred around 12:40 p.m. when a Ford Expedition, driven by a 19-year-old male, was heading northbound on SR-37. For reasons still under investigation, the vehicle crossed the center line and collided head-on with a southbound Hino box truck.
Rachel Jared, a passenger in the Ford, was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of her injuries. The teen driver and another passenger in the Expedition sustained injuries and were rushed to Mount Carmel East Hospital for treatment. The driver of the box truck was reportedly uninjured.
Troopers are continuing to investigate the crash, including factors that may have contributed to the Ford crossing into the southbound lane.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Rachel Jared during this difficult time, and we hope for a full recovery for the injured.
Head-On Collisions and Safety Challenges on Rural Ohio Highways
Crashes like the one on SR-37 near Refugee Rd highlight the devastating consequences of head-on collisions, especially on rural or two-lane highways where there is limited physical separation between opposing lanes of traffic. These roads often leave little room for error and can turn deadly within seconds.
In this incident, a momentary drift across the center line led to a fatal impact, underscoring the critical importance of attentive driving. Fatigue, distraction, or overcorrection are common causes of such crossover accidents. While the exact reason for Ford’s deviation is still under investigation, the outcome tragically illustrates how unforgiving these types of crashes can be.
The loss of Rachel Jared is a stark reminder that passengers are equally vulnerable in serious collisions, and safety measures such as seatbelt use, speed moderation, and reduced driver distraction remain essential. The fact that two others were injured further emphasizes the force involved in the crash.
OSHP and local agencies frequently work to raise awareness about the dangers of two-lane rural routes and continue to encourage drivers to use extra caution, particularly in less monitored areas with higher speeds and fewer safety features.
For families affected by fatal crashes, the emotional, medical, and financial repercussions can be immense. Accessing support services, understanding legal rights, and seeking grief resources can be crucial steps in moving forward after such life-altering events.
