Lilbourn, MO (April 21, 2025) – A two-vehicle crash in the city of Lilbourn sent one woman to the hospital on Sunday afternoon, April 20. The collision occurred at the intersection of Sixth Street and Phillip Street and involved a pickup truck and a sport utility vehicle, with emergency crews quickly responding to assist the injured.
First responders, including emergency medical services, arrived on the scene around 1:30 p.m. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 2008 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by a 70-year-old man from New Madrid failed to yield at the intersection, leading to a collision with a westbound 2022 Genesis SUV. The SUV was operated by a 53-year-old woman from Lilbourn.
Both vehicles sustained moderate damage, though only the SUV required towing from the scene by Sprouse Towing. The driver of the Genesis was wearing a seatbelt and suffered minor injuries. She was transported by EMS to Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston for evaluation and treatment. The driver of the pickup was reportedly uninjured and was able to drive away from the scene.
The crash remains under investigation by Trooper L.M. Jones of Troop E, who documented the scene and continues to review the contributing factors.
We extend our well-wishes to the injured woman and hope for her smooth and complete recovery.
Failure to Yield Accidents in Missouri
Crashes caused by failure to yield, like the one that occurred at Sixth and Phillip Streets in Lilbourn, are common at intersections, especially in small towns and residential areas. When one vehicle disregards right-of-way rules, the result can be sudden and dangerous — leading to property damage and personal injury.
In this instance, the 70-year-old driver of the northbound Chevrolet failed to yield to the westbound Genesis SUV, placing the other driver directly in harm’s way. Missouri law mandates that drivers must yield to cross-traffic when required by signage or traffic flow conditions. Disregarding these rules can result in citations and liability for injuries or damages caused.
Intersection collisions are a leading source of injury-related crashes in New Madrid County and throughout southeast Missouri. Even at lower speeds, a side-impact or angle collision can cause serious harm, particularly if either driver is caught off-guard or traveling at higher speeds. Fortunately, the use of safety belts in this incident likely helped limit the severity of the injuries sustained.
Emergency crews responded efficiently, and the injured party was transported to Missouri Delta Medical Center — a trusted regional provider of trauma care. Incidents like this underscore the importance of quick EMS intervention and the need for motorists to remain alert when navigating intersections, especially in less congested but still active local neighborhoods.
For anyone involved in a crash due to failure to yield, it’s important to get checked by medical professionals immediately and to report the incident in full. Insurance follow-up and, in some cases, legal guidance may be necessary to address injury claims or vehicle damage.
