Lima, OH (April 21, 2025) – A Saturday afternoon rear-end collision on North Jackson Street resulted in one person being transported to the hospital, according to a report from the Lima Police Department. The incident, which occurred at approximately 12:10 p.m., involved two vehicles and prompted emergency medical response for an injured passenger.
Authorities say 22-year-old Matthew Wright was driving northbound on North Jackson Street behind a vehicle operated by 22-year-old Piper Moline. As Moline’s vehicle slowed to make a left-hand turn, Wright reportedly failed to maintain an assured clear distance and struck the back of her car.
Moline was not injured in the crash. However, her front-seat passenger, identified as 22-year-old Makenna Maus’Gilbert, suffered a head injury and was transported to Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center for further evaluation and treatment.
Wright was cited at the scene for failure to maintain an assured clear distance ahead, a common contributing factor in rear-end collisions.
We extend our best wishes to Makenna Maus’Gilbert for a full and timely recovery.
Rear-End Collisions in Ohio
Rear-end crashes, like the one that occurred on North Jackson Street in Lima, are among the most frequent types of traffic collisions in Ohio. Often the result of distracted driving, tailgating, or delayed reaction times, these accidents can occur in a split second, particularly when the lead vehicle slows or stops unexpectedly.
In this case, the driver of the trailing vehicle failed to adjust to the reduced speed of the car ahead, a violation known as failing to maintain an assured clear distance. Ohio law requires that drivers maintain a safe following distance that allows for sudden stops or turns, such as the left-hand turn being executed by Piper Moline.
While the rear-end impact may seem minor in some cases, the resulting injuries can be significant, particularly for passengers who may be caught off guard. Head and neck injuries, such as those potentially sustained by Makenna Maus’Gilbert, are especially common, even in low-to-moderate impact crashes. Prompt evaluation and treatment are essential, as symptoms can worsen hours or days after the initial incident.
If you or a loved one has been injured as a passenger in a rear-end accident, understanding your legal and medical options is key to protecting your health and securing the compensation you may be entitled to.
