Louisville, KY (October 31, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred early Thursday morning in the Newburg neighborhood, resulting in the death of a 3-month-old boy. The incident took place around 5:40 a.m. at the intersection of Newburg Road and East Indian Trail.
According to the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD), the crash involved a 2013 Dodge Dart driven by 19-year-old Lyillie Pena, who reportedly crashed into the back of a Ford Escape. The impact caused the Dodge Dart to burst into flames. Upon arrival, police found Pena outside her burning vehicle, holding her injured infant. The child was immediately transported to Norton Children's Hospital in critical condition but was pronounced dead at 8:44 a.m.
The driver of the Ford Escape was unharmed in the collision. He reported to police that he was approaching the traffic light at East Indian Trail when he noticed a vehicle speeding towards him. The collision pushed his vehicle into the grassy median.
Lyillie Pena has since been arrested and charged with vehicular homicide, DUI, wanton endangerment, and criminal mischief.
